Early History

In 1865, the first jail was constructed in Denver, which was a small, two-story structure made of brick and stone. The jail was located on the corner of 15th and Market Streets and had a capacity of only 20 inmates.

In 1903, the city opened a new jail in the downtown area, which was capable of holding up to 200 inmates. In the 1950s, a new jail was constructed in the same location as the previous facility, which was capable of housing up to 300 inmates. The current facility is a massive, eight-story building that can house over 1,400 inmates.
